Why This Page Exists
If you've found your way here, I'm guessing you're a little like me.
You don't just want to know that something works.
You want to know why it works.
I've always wanted to know how the magician did the trick.
Not because I wanted the magic to disappear.
Quite the opposite.
I wanted to understand it deeply enough to appreciate it even more.
The funny thing is, understanding the mechanism never ruined the magic for me. It deepened it.
Looking back, becoming a hypnotist feels less like changing careers and more like following the same curiosity into a new room.
Why do some experiences stay with us for a lifetime?
Why can one moment completely reorganize the way we see ourselves?
Why do some habits seem impossible to break...until suddenly they're not?
What actually changes in the brain?
I still don't think I've reached the bottom of any of those questions.
So if you're the kind of person who enjoys research papers, asks one more question than everyone else, or has ever found yourself happily disappearing down an internet rabbit hole because you just had to know how something worked...

What Is Integrative Change Work?
If hypnosis is one of the tools I use, Change Work is the larger framework it lives within.
Rather than asking,
"What's the right technique for this person?"
Change Work asks a different question:
How does lasting change actually happen?
I trained in Integrative Hypnosis & Change Work with Melissa Tiers.
It's an approach that combines an integrative model of hypnosis with evidence-informed principles from neuroscience, learning theory, therapeutic memory reconsolidation, nervous system regulation, NLP, and related disciplines to create a practical, flexible framework for change.
Because of my training, I'm much more interested in understanding how human beings change than I am in becoming loyal to any one modality.
Your brain isn't responding to the name of the technique.
It's responding to the experience you're having.
That's why no two sessions look exactly alike.
The principles stay the same.
How we apply them changes with the person in front of me.
My loyalty isn't to a particular modality.
It's to understanding
how human beings change
and using that understanding to help the person in front of me.
Why Does It Work?
Everything we've talked about so far rests on one remarkable fact:
Your brain is always changing.
From the moment you're born until the day you die, your brain is continually adapting in response to your experiences.
Neuroscientists call this neuroplasticity—the brain's remarkable ability to reorganize itself by strengthening, weakening, and creating new neural connections throughout life.
That doesn't mean change is always easy.
The brain loves efficiency.
Once it has learned a pattern that reliably predicts what to expect, it tends to keep using it.
That's wonderfully helpful when you're learning to ride a bike or play an instrument.
It's less helpful when the pattern you've learned is anxiety before every performance, a critical inner voice, or the belief that you always have to keep everyone else happy.
One of the biggest shifts in neuroscience has been the realization that the brain isn't simply reacting to the world.
It's constantly trying to predict what's going to happen next.
Based on everything you've learned so far, your brain is continually asking:
What am I expecting to happen?
What does this mean?
How should I respond?
Most of this happens outside conscious awareness.
Your brain isn't responding only to what's happening now. It's responding to what it has learned to expect.
Our understanding of memory has changed dramatically over the last few decades of research.
For many years, scientists believed memories became relatively fixed once they were formed. We now know they're much more dynamic.
When a memory is reactivated, there's a brief window during which it's temporarily open to being updated. If, during that window, the brain has a meaningful emotional experience that contradicts what it has learned to expect—a prediction error—new learning can become integrated before that memory is stored again. This process is known as therapeutic memory reconsolidation.
Rather than simply learning to manage an old response, the brain has the opportunity to update the learning itself.
This is one of the reasons experience matters so much.
Information is valuable.
Insight is valuable.
But it's often not enough on its own.
Change doesn't happen because someone gives your brain better information.
It happens because your brain has an opportunity to have a new experience that's meaningful enough to update what it has learned.

Where Science Meets Wonder
When I first began studying hypnosis, I wondered whether understanding the science would somehow diminish the magic.
It didn't.
If anything, the opposite happened. The more I've learned about how brains change, the more extraordinary I think they are.
Our brains remain capable of adapting throughout our lives. Patterns we've had our whole lives can change.
Meaningful experiences can reshape what we predict, perceive, and make possible.
I find all of that astonishing.
We've learned an incredible amount about how change happens.
And yet...there's still so much we don't know.
Every person brings a different history.
A different nervous system.
A different imagination.
A different way of making meaning.
No amount of neuroscience will ever replace the privilege of witnessing someone discover they aren't as stuck as they believed they were.
Or watching a child realize they're braver than they thought.
Or hearing a musician say,
"That fear I've lived with for years...it's just gone."
Understanding creates more wonder.
That's why I keep asking questions.
